Fuel Solenoids

A Word About Fuel Solenoids.  All our solenoids (except the #FS15) have 2 internal electro-magnets wound together. One large magnet to pull the plunger in against a spring, and another small magnet to hold it in. That's why there are three wires. One black ground wire, one white pull-in wire, and a red hold-in wire. The large pull-in magnet draws a significant amount of power and creates a lot of heat. This large magnet is designed to only be activated when the starter is cranking and will overheat and burn up the solenoid if activated for more than a couple minutes. It draws about 50 amps so needs a relay in the power supply. Once the engine starts the small hold-in magnet keeps the solenoid pulled in until the power is turned off and the spring pushes the plunger out shutting the engine down.  Also, see how to check solenoid adjustment >> (adjustment procedure)
